How Our Race Was Named
Richard Glew
Stefanacci, the oldest child of Ho-Ho-Kus natives Beth and Rich
Stefanacci, was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma, a form of bone
cancer, at the age of 13. Richard battled this disease with great
courage, strength and a passion for living life to the fullest each
and every day. After undergoing months of chemotherapy and just a
few weeks after surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his arm,
Richard participated in our annual HHK5K in October 2006. Richard
triumphantly crossed the finish line in just over one hour to cheers
and applause from the crowd.
Richard passed away on June 12, 2007, at the age of
14.
To honor his great spirit, last year the Contemporary
Club of Ho-Ho-Kus renamed our annual 5K run Richard’s Run – HHK5K.
The proceeds from this event will benefit Go 4 the Goal Foundation
and Emmanuel Cancer Foundation – both of these charities provide
financial and emotional support to children with cancer.
Richard’s family continues to share stories of
Richard, posting them – along with the story of Richard’s year with
cancer – on their website at
www.Go4theGoal.com.
